PB4L Conference 2019 - Keynote Speaker: George Sugai

Friday August July PB4L Conference Session 1: George Sugai (website) resources  School Climate + Local Context: Implementing School-wide Positive Behaviour Support

Q + A Session:

PB4L Variables for Success

  • administrator support (SLT)

  • needs a strong team, meeting frequently

  • teaching PB4L lessons within the classroom setting

Norms and expectations need to be consistent ex) Year 7/8 fine for form teachers, issues elsewhere

  • kids know what is accepted where and flip their switches on and off

  • needs same consistency across the school

  • What kids say don’t match what they feel (“I hate school, this is the worst” but school is their safe place)

Tier 2 - looks like small group interventions

ex) Jude card, check in check out cards, behaviour cards etc. providing additional support for students who can’t self manage and need help with their cards

can’t change parent behaviour, but keep them in contact - positive communication, using common language related to school values, giving examples of pros and cons, advise of next steps

  • positive enforcements; sending postcards, being appreciative of things being returned to school, keeping them responsible and accountable

PB4L done well = 80% of children responding, 20% will need extra support - same with staff

  • extra attention to be successful; Tier 2 and Tier 3 for staff members

  • engage, build relationships - using the same initiatives with the adults (CARR postcards etc.)

Greeting kids at the door - research proven

  • Personalized to each student

  • Positive greeting helps with academic engagement and decreased behaviour problems

  • Student who does not greet you, pull them aside, have them greet others - improve their positive interactions

  • Greet staff as well - improving school climate
